Find the kind of senior care you need, from in-home care providers to live-in facilities.
Find goods & services which make a senior's life
safer and yours less stressful.
There are a few important things to keep in mind for those who are senior citizens, and especially for those individuals who live alone.
Hire Licensed Companies
Thousands of homeowners are scammed every year by unqualified individuals who can convince an older person to hire them. It is unwise to open your door for solicitors who come to your home trying to sell you a service. All reputable companies can be found in the phone book or online. It is also well to check with the Better Business Bureau. Recommendations from a friend may not be the best idea either, if that company cannot produce a license and official customer recommendations.
Purchase Only Services You Need
Many people feel pressured to buy additional services or items. It is well to delay any purchase until more information is obtained. Part of that information should be a second opinion from another company. Be sensitive to the feeling of being manipulated by companies who want your business. Reputable companies do not need to stress their customers in order to get people to buy. Never hesitate to say "No thank you." Call them at a later date once you have more information.
Home Maintance Safety
Do not ignore problems in the home that can lead to further damage. Roof leaks, plumbing leaks, broken appliances and structural decay can all lead to higher costs later. While home maintenance can be costly, early repairs can save money in the long run. Also, safety is compromised with faulty wiring, a refrigerator that will not cool sufficiently, broken stairs or air conditioning systems that will not cool or heat.
City Or County Home Repair Assistance
Most areas have programs that assist seniors with home maintenance costs. Some grant program will replace, repair or install needed items, at no cost to you. Call your local city hall for information, or call the agencies in your area that have senior support programs and information. For disabled seniors, specialized items such as ramps, grab bars or doorway modification may be installed as needed for no cost.
